G95/HK416A8 Arrives in the Ranks

G95 – The Bundeswehr’s New Service Rifle

The G95 is the successor to the G36 and will become the Bundeswehr’s new standard assault rifle. In its A1 and KA1 configurations, it will accompany soldiers for decades to come. The first units will receive their rifles on December 4, 2025. The new assault rifle sets new standards in precision, reliability, and modularity.

Meeting High Expectation

“Whoever shoots faster and hits better wins the firefight.” This principle is common in the Bundeswehr’s marksmanship training. The necessary “hardware” to support this mindset has been receiving an upgrade since December 2025.

To ensure soldiers can emerge victorious from a potential combat engagement, the Bundeswehr established high requirements for the successor to the G36—requirements that the G95 successfully met during extensive testing. The new rifle will enter service in the standard KA1 configuration as well as the A1 variant, the latter featuring a barrel approximately six centimeters longer.

The G95 is manufactured by Heckler und Koch and is a Bundeswehr-adapted version of the HK416 rifle produced by the small-arms manufacturer in Baden-Württemberg. It is based on the widely used NATO-standard American AR-15 design, similar to the AR-10-based G27 and G28. This significantly simplifies training across different weapons, as handling and controls are nearly identical.
